{Fort Wayne, Oct. 7, 2022} – Imagine being born in the years of World War I and the Spanish Flu pandemic. Imagine all you would have seen and experienced in the over 100 years since that time. For two residents of Lutheran Life Villages- The Village at Pine Valley, no imagination is needed! Doris Barker (105) and Mary Coffelt (104) lived it. Not only that, they both have birthdays just days apart!

Kim Martin, Activity Director at The Village at Pine Valley, describes Mary as an active and social person, who enjoys puzzles, exercise class, and even a recent trip to the zoo! “She is just so full of joy. She is always smiling and giggling. She is just a blessing to be around.” Mary is also known for treating other residents impromptu singing performances. One of her favorite songs to sing is “ How Much is that Doggie in the Window?”

Doris is a bit more reserved, generally preferring to spend time with her family and in 1:1 visits with staff. Still, both women are known throughout the campus as inspirations and symbols of lives lived well. When asked what the secret is to living well into her second century, Mary shares a tried and true method: an apple a day. “My mom used to pack me an apple every single day, and I still enjoy them very much!” she says.

There has already been a fair amount of celebration for both of these amazing ladies, but it’s not over yet! A joint celebration is scheduled for 2pm on Wednesday, October 12 at The Village at Pine Valley, 9802 Coldwater Road.
